Etsy SEO: how many tags — and how long a title — actually works
Etsy search works on keyword matching between what a buyer types and what's in your listing's title and tags. Getting both right is one of the highest-leverage things a handmade seller can do, and it's also one of the most commonly misunderstood parts of Etsy SEO.
How many tags should an Etsy listing have?
Etsy gives every listing 13 tag slots, each up to 20 characters. Use all 13. An empty tag slot is a missed chance to match a search phrase a buyer might type — there's no penalty for "using them all," and no benefit to holding some back.
Each tag should be a real phrase a buyer might actually search — not a single generic word. "Jewelry" is a single word competing with millions of listings; "minimalist gold hoop earrings" is a multi-word phrase with far less competition and a much better match to buyer intent. Etsy's own search algorithm rewards multi-word tags for exactly this reason.
Avoid repeating the same word across many tags — it doesn't help you rank for more searches, it just wastes slots that could cover different buyer phrases (materials, occasion, style, recipient, colour).
Title length and what goes in it
Etsy titles can run up to 140 characters. The words in your title carry real search weight — arguably more than tags — so don't waste the space on filler. A well-built title front-loads the most important keyword phrase, then adds supporting descriptive terms a buyer might search alongside it (material, style, occasion, colour), read naturally rather than as a comma-stuffed keyword dump.
Tags vs. title: they're not the same job
Tags and title both feed Etsy's search matching, but they're not interchangeable:
- Title is what a buyer sees first in search results and on the listing page — it needs to read like a real product name, not just a keyword list.
- Tags are backend-only — buyers never see them directly, so they're the place for the synonyms, phrasing variants, and long-tail terms that wouldn't fit naturally in a readable title.
A strong listing usually repeats its most important 2–3 keyword phrases between the title and a few tags (reinforcing the match), while using the remaining tag slots to cover different angles a buyer might search instead.
How Craftale handles this
Craftale generates titles and the full set of Etsy tags together for every item, matched to Etsy's actual limits automatically — so you're never guessing at the character count or leaving tag slots empty. The same item also gets platform-specific versions for Instagram, Pinterest, and every other shop you sell on, each following that platform's own rules.
Etsy's exact limits can change over time — this reflects Etsy's public guidance as of mid-2026; check Etsy's own Seller Handbook if you're relying on an exact number for something other than day-to-day listing work.
