How many hashtags should a handmade shop use on Instagram?

Instagram lets you attach up to 30 hashtags to a post, but "the max" and "the right number" are different questions. For a small handmade shop, more isn't automatically better.

The short answer: 5–15, chosen deliberately

Instagram's own guidance and most creator-economy testing point the same direction: around 5–15 well-chosen hashtags tends to outperform maxing out at 30. Instagram's discovery system also increasingly favours engagement and relevance signals over hashtag volume, so a wall of 30 generic tags competes with everything else using those same tags, while a smaller, specific set is more likely to put you in front of people actually looking for what you make.

What "well-chosen" means for handmade sellers

Mix hashtag types rather than picking 15 variations of the same idea:

Avoid only using the highest-volume tags in your niche (#jewelry, #handmade) — they have enormous competition, so your post is buried within seconds. A mix of a couple of broad tags with several more specific ones tends to work better than either extreme.

Caption length

Instagram captions can run up to 2,200 characters, but most of that is rarely read — the first line or two (before "more") is what actually gets seen in the feed. Lead with the most compelling line, then use the rest of the caption for the story, materials, or details that convert someone who's already interested.

How Craftale handles this

Craftale generates a caption and a tailored hashtag set for every item specifically for Instagram — separate from what it generates for Etsy, Pinterest, or any other platform you sell on — following each platform's own length and format conventions automatically.

Instagram's algorithm and best practices shift over time — this reflects publicly documented guidance as of mid-2026.
