On-site SEO basics for a maker's own website

Selling from your own website means there's no marketplace search algorithm doing the work for you — Google is the whole discovery channel, which makes two small HTML fields disproportionately important: the page title and the meta description.

The page title: keep it under 60 characters

Google typically displays only the first 50–60 characters of a page title in search results — anything longer gets truncated with an ellipsis, often mid-word. Lead with what the page actually is, not your brand name first: search engines weight words near the start of the title more heavily, and most site templates already append the brand name automatically at the end anyway.

The meta description: aim for 140–160 characters

The meta description doesn't directly affect ranking, but it's the snippet a searcher actually reads before deciding whether to click — a specific, concrete description (materials, what makes the item different, a light call to action) meaningfully improves click-through even between two pages ranking in the same position.

Product description length

For an actual product page, 250–500 words tends to be the sweet spot — enough substance for search engines to understand what the page is about and for a buyer to get real information, without turning into a wall of text nobody reads.

How Craftale handles this

Craftale generates a personal-site-specific title and meta description within these practical limits for every item — separate from what it writes for Etsy, Instagram, or any marketplace you also sell on — so the version meant for your own site is actually built for how Google reads a page, not repurposed marketplace copy.

General on-page SEO conventions shift slowly but do shift — this reflects guidance verified live as of 2026-08-10.
