How to write an Etsy product description that sells

A good Etsy title gets a buyer to click. The description is what gets them to actually buy — and it's the part sellers most often either neglect or over-stuff with keywords at the expense of anyone wanting to read it.

Lead with the buyer, not the specs

The single most common mistake is opening with dimensions and materials before saying anything about what the item actually is for the buyer. Compare:

Both sentences contain the same facts. The second one leads with why someone would want it, then backs that up with the specifics — which is also more persuasive to an actual human reading it, not just a search algorithm.

Structure that works

Etsy gives you up to 5,000 characters, which is far more than most listings need. A description that actually gets read tends to follow a simple shape:

  1. One or two sentences on what it is and why it matters — the hook.
  2. The concrete details — materials, dimensions, care instructions, what's included.
  3. Practical buyer questions answered up front — processing time, customization options, sizing — the questions that would otherwise become a message in your inbox.
  4. A short line on your process or story, if it's genuinely part of what makes the piece worth the price (handmade, small-batch, a particular technique) — this is often why a buyer chooses a handmade listing over a mass-produced alternative in the first place.

Don't keyword-stuff the body text

Etsy's search weighting leans on the title and tags far more than the description body — see our Etsy tags and titles guide for the mechanics of that. Repeating the same keyword phrase five times in the description doesn't meaningfully help your search ranking, and it makes the listing read badly to an actual buyer, which hurts conversion more than it could ever help discovery.

How Craftale handles this

Craftale generates a description for every item that follows this shape automatically — built from your brand's own voice and the item's real details (materials, price, what makes it distinct) — and tailors it per platform, since what reads well as an Etsy description and what reads well as an Instagram caption aren't the same piece of writing.

Try it on your own items

Craftale generates titles, descriptions, and platform-specific tags like this for every item you list — free to start.
